After four years of touring, Shpongle return with a 5th album, though much has changed. Music production isn’t something for just enthusiasts anymore, and the tools needed to make an entire album in your bedroom are becoming increasingly available and affordable… yet this just makes Shpongle’s return all the more welcome. In a time where more and more focus is put on commercialization and churning out quick hits Simon and Raja’s latest work is a welcome breathe of fresh air wedded to nostalgia, and proves that the group isn’t ready to become stagnant anytime soon.

INFO:

After 15 years and 7 albums, Even Tundra is the album Benji Vaughan always wanted to make. Up until now he has hidden behind various guises (such as Younger Brother and the Zap ) and done much of his work with the Godfathers of Psychedelic Electronica – Si Posford and Raja Ram.

With Even Tundra the time came to remove the mask and avoid taking shelter in any particular scene or genre. He describes making the album as ‘ like making a folk record – just me, my sound lab and an emotion or atmosphere i wanted to hear – not a dance floor i wanted to fill.’

The result is unique sound collage filled with understated sound manipulation and melodies that should be heard from end to end to fully appreciate.

The project will also feature a video for every track on the album which Benji has also produced himself , and contain some incredible visual techniques. The video for first single ‘Even Tundra for example is quite simply astonishing. It looks like CGI when in fact Benji uses industrial magnets and metallic fluid to create his other worldly effects. Unlike most music videos where the videos are a 3rd parties view of the music in this case the visual aspect really is an extension of Benji’s vision.

Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland opens with the massive Electroplasm, a rapidfire ascent into eastern scales and rich harmonic textures, underscored with a strongly pronounced rhythmic foundation. They dial in a different mode with Shpongolese Spoken Here, which transitions from glitchy breaks to four-on-the-floor mayhem before settling into a more laid-back but bouncy number. Nothing is Something Worth Doing is a grounded yet floaty work featuring a sophisticated tonal and harmonic palette, six-and-a-half minutes of timelessness before fading into the long-awaited Ineffable Mysteries. With original atmospheric and vocal samples from India, this tracks simple beginnings lead to a strong rhythmic drive and incredible sonic manipulations blending Raja Rams flute, Indian vocals, and synthesized creations.

A winning collaboration between two of the psy-trance scenes best producers the legendary Simon Posford (Hallucinogen, Shpongle) and the highly prolific Benji Vaughan (Prometheus, The Zapp), Younger Brother is guaranteed to be huge at underground parties and in the homes of trance fans everywhere. Younger Brother is the latest project from Simon, who has been concentrating on his down-tempo project Shpongle, and will be a welcome 4/4 dance floor return to his numerous dance music fans. Still he has brought the latest influences with him merging them together into a new blend of Shpongles slow beats and the faster dance of Hallucinogens trance. Prometheus influence further accentuates the eclectic nature of this project with a wide range of sounds, samples, effects and beats that create unique fusion of musical fantasia, from tribal chants, hard driving rhythms, electronic effects, trance mayhem and very British samples from the Isle of White festival to famous voices from the past reminiscent of Mr. Scruff, Lemon Jelly, and Coldcut nostalgic sampling or Royksopp with its mix of melodies and slow dancey beats. Younger Brother will be premiering their live show touring the UK, USA, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Finland, and Canada. For bookings or press inquiries contact Twisted.

INFO:

It has been years since Shpongle, the popular ambient project from Simon Posford and sonic co-pilot Raja Ram, released their epic first album on Twisted Records to worldwide critical acclaim. Finally they have produced a second installment to this seminal album with even more groundbreaking programming and genre busting fusions. Continuing on where they left off the latest album reaches further into the realms of the outside world with unique fusions using live musicians and vocalists blending acoustic guitars, Turkish operatic singing, Latin percussion, Arabic atmospheres and Rajas unmistakable flute lines all sonically manipulated by Simons incredible production skills. This album like the last, is so musically pleasing and audible complex as to defy clear description, but just as the first album sold over 20,000 copies, we anticipate Tales of The Inexpressible to appeal to an ever increasing audience, regardless of the indefinable nature of their sound. Shpongle is not a collection of dull ambient soundscapes, it is a bright multi colored journey into an audio hyper reality, full of adventure and imagination. With amazing reports from listeners worldwide and still more people discovering this unique sound each day Shpongle has paved the way for a new style of multi-layered highly complex and detailed music for the millennium. Both Simon Posford & Raja Ram are avid musicians with a mission and are constantly touring the world to spread the Shpongle sound. Raja has just returned from a marathon 17 parties in Bahia, Brazil and is now embarking on a Japanese tour visiting Tokyo and Okanawa before returning to the UK for the summer festivals and Ibizia. Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) has also been busy this year, playing to 3000 people in Canada, Switzerland, and Israel last week Athens on the 8th of April and on to a host of summer festivals including WOMAD, The Big Chill ,Mount Fuji in Japan and the main dance stage of Glastonbury 2002.
