So in reading Tori Amos’s interview in last month’s issue of Sound on Sound, there is a mention of a passage in her book, “Piece by Piece” where she warns against “audio pornography”, or the use of effects for their own sake. Is most psytrance audioporn?

Good point and possibly right, I think if she heard Twisted stuff her brain would melt due to layering over load - it is not for Morloks :!:

Good psytrance doesn’t rely on FX to make their songs. Cheesy shit uses too much FX

Is there psytrance that get’s caught up in synthesizing new sound and fails to really create listenable music? Absolutely, but it is usually fairly readily apparent.

However, as a music style trance creation relies on layer after layer of harmonizing effects. I think that Amos’ statement is a little strange, since what she is basically describing is sound for sound’s sake. If you don’t like it, then don’t listen to it, and if the artist had no real goal with his music it rarely ever sounds good.

Yeah, Amos’s statement doesn’t make much sense really, because most music, no matter how meaningful, is still just music for the sake of having music…

If your creation does not have vision… and you are just pressing buttons and throwing out random samples… well obviously it is going to sound like trash. But I don’t think Amos has any real point in saying “FX for the sake of FX”, because there is no such deeper meaning for having effects… let’s not be ridiculous… come on!

sounds like a very pretentious statement to make

i often use effects for the sake of using effects to do something different and make something FULL of vision and newness…. but i’m not doing it for some kind of DEEP DEEP meaning…. i mean what the fuck does she expect???

hi, I am using effects to solve world hunger!  ..... i mean honestly…. damn…..

well, i’m not suprised… tori amos has been rather full of pretention from the start

I’m sure he/she/it doesn’t know any twisted artists raspberry
But maybe cheap FX, added in masses, just for the sake of having added them, but not fitting to the song or not edited to fit nicely into it is what he/she/it means.

Anyways, don’t attack me for saying that, and maybe I’m missing the point. I’m no musician (...I just love Hallucinogen, Younger Brother etc….  )

I don’t think she even knows what she’s talking about. She’s just a pianist who doesn’t experiment with anything.

...and I bet you’re right Ray. She probably has never heard anything from twisted.

“psytrance” lives from odd fx to portray alienation. what was achieved in early 90ies by the use of synthesizers - which sounds were alienated to the average listener - is today tried to achieve with the use of fx. if somebody likes to describe a new (and maybe spaced-out) experience as porn maybe this person likes porn alot or doesn

Lets not forget that some things that are deemed pornography are actually art.

good point..and i actually think that twisted rises above the rest.. i don’t think any of their artists’ songs use effects to cover up a lack of substance at all..it’s just about the most intelligent music i’ve ever heard
