...

This situation reminds me of an old “sci-fi” book by Arkadij and Boris Strugacki, “The monday starts with saturday”. It is basically an image of russian magotechnic laboratory, the scientists are basically mages, researching things like conjuration, and so on… Quite an idyllic book, but what I want to say, these scientists had a certain magical power, quite a great one. They avoided to misuse it for selfish purposes. For example, one young scientist summoned some wine bottles for a party, but he gave away some money after, like he would pay for them. Who often misused the magic in selfish ways, suffered from having a grey hairs growing from ears and was thrown out of the magotechnic research facility, the N.O.T.H.I.N.G.
So, we nowadays can download a lot of music without paying, and I’m glad it’s not like in that fictional world, otherwise I couldn’t plug the headphones in my ears, for them being so overgrown with the grey hairs. And I think it looks like Boris and Arkadij predicted the media copying dilemma.

I also absolutely not agree with the fact that the album can be released on the p2p before the official date.
But I agree that some people would download it or of course other albums because of money. I have downloaded a lot without buying because I didn’t have enough money. I think people who are earning money and who are enjoying that kind of music should buy them, first to help the community to grow up and finally for the quality, for having the CD in hands.
Personally I still use p2p and my rule is now to buy if I like.

Too many people are assuming that because some people download music that the music goes unappreciated. Just because Twisted doesn’t see every penny that they deserve, does not mean that their work goes unappreciated. I do believe that money is important and that as artists they do indeed need money to keep doing what they are doing. But, the “bigger” picture is the music and the appreciation and love for the music. I know that a lot of pirating I do, is from artists that I wouldn’t normally buy or care to invest money into. For example, I have a few Aphex Twin albums on my comp. But trully if it wern’t for pirating, I just would not bother listening or going through the trouble of finding and paying for a hardcopy, I don’t think his music is good enough. But since pirating is something I have access to, I downloaded a few of his albums and appreciate a few of his songs. So in addition, pirating also helps expose music and artists to many people. Bigger audience = Potential of more $$ and of course the <3

if you only like one song… buy the single song off any of the million digital sites that sell singles. that’s the beauty of the digital sites… if you only like one song, you can support the artist and that one song through buying that one track you enjoy smile

i think there’s 2 lines of appreciation here that should be discerned from each other.

asthetic appreciation - enjoying the music and the art - downloading a song and enjoying it based soley on the song itself…

artist appreciation - enjoying the artist as a whole… the albums, the artwork, etc… this is when you need to start buying things…

the music can exist… both of us work day jobs to pay our bills, so right now, people can asthetically enjoy our music and download what they can find but its still available for purchase. eventually, however, we want to be the artists…

artists, however, like posford, ott, etc, are musicians day in and day out and depend on your money to feed them and their families… so if you appreciate the ARTIST, then buy the music.

if all you care about is the one song you’ve downloaded, then download it… and if you feel like supporting the person that provided that music, than buy it.

Bon Jovi had a good point when he was on Howard Stern a few months back.  He basically said the popularity of only buying singles is killing the B-Side market.  Those songs that arent the popular hits but are on the album.  A lot of people wont ever hear them b/x they only know the one song they’ve heard and like and only bought that track instead of the entire album.

yeah. it really does suck. the “album” is dying slowly… but there’s still those of us that love the album.

it always surprises us when you look at the stats for downloads of nothing lasts… some of the tracks are downloaded more than others… we dont understand how that album can be listened to in pieces…

I bought my first Psy-Vinyl 1996…before knowing what GOA or PSY is…
and it was “THE LONE DERANGER”...I collected vinyl before but from this moment on I was infected and I’m proud to say:
I got most Twisted releases now! Legal and on vinyl grin

But without filesharing I would have never experienced some sound…
I still mix with vinyl so I have to buy music…
I think filesharing should be used for prelistening and if u like BUY IT grin
A german band did a nice example…
they produced an album, made a release as vinyl and cd…the interesting thing is that both came in a pizza-bag with their logo on and the vinyl/cd itself was a pic-one with the shape of a pizza…that was it worth to buy it…
...but to make the album interesting they put the whole album with highspeed into a filesharing-network on the release-day. All could download it…and u could prelisten…the only thing was that there was a sampletext over the music all 30-40 secs “dear Mr.Leecher thanx for downloading…blabla”...funny idea I think…
and to top this now: they put a paper (formed like a peperoni into the cases with a code. This code could be filled into a field on their website and voila:
U could download the full album in MP3 too…
that’s service and innovation grin

A few years ago, some CD came out. It had most of Sgt. Peppers, except it was… remixed.

It sucked.

A lot.

And I would advise you stay away from it.

Well I think you’re being slightly over the top here.. without filesharing I wouldn’t know about 90% of the music I listen to today, which has in turn influenced everything in my life greatly. It’s only a bad thing if people completely stop buying CDs or merchandise or going to gigs… which I don’t see happening.

Don’t blame filesharing just because it’s “evil and illegal”.

Another fact:
The market is changing very fast…
10 years ago it was normal that the labels released 1-2 singles and 1 album a month ( I dont speak bout SonyBMGWarnerwhateverBIG). Today thers such a huge output because of the possibilities of making music. Everyone is getting an artist (I dont speak about good or bad artists nor good or bad music) and wants to be part of the music-community so everyone releases whereever…
...In the past I went to the local vinylstore and checked the news. They gave me up to 20 vinyl and it was OK…
if they would release as much on vinyl as there is output today I would have to listen to 100 vinyls….I cant prelisten so much in the online-stores…the only possibility to listen is p2p. Thers samples on every onlinestore, but they wont give u the idea of the track itself!
Anyways:
If u like BUY!

[quote author=“Malekai”]I very rarely download music these days. But if I do, and like it, I ALWAYS order the CD(s) afterwards, no exception. And great albums like Shpongle’s and Ott’s shouldn’t be downloaded at all smile

I totally agree with you and wouldn’t except anything less than a hard copy Twisted release especially due to the production which goes into them.

But each to their own….my mate also had Ott weeks ago from a file sharing site I guess it must have been someone either on a promo post out or pre order etc.
