many times in the electronic genre, I will be listening to an otherwise good instrumental song but then some terrible vocals appear and just ruin the entire song for me. sometimes I feel like some artists think that they wont be accepted by the mainstream view if they dont include vocals of some sort.

personally I prefer purely instrumental electronic music, with perhaps a few voice samples thrown in. so how do you all feel about this? are there any bands/albums that you think shouldve never included vocals? and is most of the music you listen to instrumental or include vocals?

edit: I guess this doesnt have to only apply to the electronic genre, thats just what I mainly listen to.

Nothing wrong with a good vocal sample especially if it’s fitting for the track. Yes it can and has been over used in tracks. I think it should be more subtle when used. I like more instrumental tracks where the sounds take you. But there are some great shpongle tracks where you feel like that then a McKenna sample comes in and it’s so perfect.

I love vocal sampling!

I think that psytrance in general is much better without lyrics per se, meaning regular lyrics which you will hear in any radio song. But sampling I think is awesome. I don’t think Shpongle or Ott’s songs would be the same without vocal samplings…

I love hearing vocals in electronic music but as mentioned it has to fit well.. I dcan’t think of examples where it was aweful.

I think sea of blissful awareness is perfect but saying that I couldn’t imagine Hallucinogen with the same kind of vocals in.

If done with taste the vocals add the final spice to make the track complete. One of the most perfect examples of this is All I want by Si and Benj.

I agree wholeheartedly!
In many instances the vocals are just a way of getting airplay and mass appeal, but they distract me from listening to the music, which is what interests me.

On the whole I prefer electronic music to be totally instrumental, but occasionally a sampled vocal can add to the track. Usually though, it’s just irritating. It’s very hard to get right.
Full vocals are a total no-no IMHO.  (99.9% of the time  .)
Often vocals work better when they are in a language I can’t understand, because I can’t tell how ridiculous / cheesy the lyrics are!
