Nine Inch Nails have just recently release a new album “Ghosts I-IV”, which got me thinking about potential Shpongle releases.  I know that NIN is essentially the antithesis of Shpongle, but musical direction isn’t what got me thinking about this.  What spurred this though was the truly incredible packages that have been assembled for the album and the methods of the release.

From a free download of the first 9 of 36 tracks, to the ubber-luxurious $300 “Ultra Deluxe Edition” which includes 2 CDs, 1 DVD, 1 BluRay disc, Art book, 4xVinyls and 2 Giclee prints with an immediate download code for the whole album… everything about the albums release is awesome and seems well suited to a future Shpongle release (perhaps the phantom SHPONGLE BOX SET with/or the 4th album!!!).

Imagine if the below was filled with Shpongle material and imagery

Being the independent Twisted Records, they have the flexibility to do something like this. If Shpongle were to release something of this calibre, and I know I would be dropping $300 without a blink.

you can check out all 5 versions of the release here http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options

Slightly off-topic, but how is Trent Reznor’s NIN project the ‘antithesis’ of Shpongle?  I always felt that Trent was extremely adventurous, innovative, creative and experimental in his music.  For many mainstream rock fans, he was the gateway to industrial, electronic, or even ambient (see ‘A Warm Place’).  While his aesthetic might be quite different from Shpongle’s, I would dare suggest that the two projects are not too dissimilar.  Any one of the billions of knock-off wannabe music acts would be a far better candidate for being Shpongle’s ‘antithesis’ in my view.

Now, for on topic…I too would drop quite a lot of coin on a special Shpongle package, ESPECIALLY if I knew that they would be getting almost all of the money from it.  Hell, I’ve already paid for every album twice anyway (I have the vinyls and CDs). smile

Early reports indicate that Trent’s experiment was a HUGE success commercially.  I can say that the project was also a huge success with the very anti-record-label underground community.  Could be worth a shot for Shpongle…

I mean antithesis to Shpongle only in the sense of the mood or tone of the musical direction; Shpongle is very uplifting and full of light in general, whereas NIN is not what I would call uplifting music and is usually pretty dark.  That said I think that as far as production genius goes, Simon and Trent are both top notch. I completely agree that the have many similarities in some areas, and these are my two favorite artists ever, they are kind of the musical yin and yang for me.. they make a nice whole.

ps. I’m positive the experimental release of Ghosts I-IV was a massive success, the $300 set sold out in less than a day, luckily I got my order in for one.  LOL

I second that!!
Would also drop some cash if all the albums came out on SACD
I bet there is something in the works, since the last boxset got delayed or canceled

Dreaming of that face again. It’s bright and blue and shimmering. Grinning wide and comforting me with it’s three warm and wild eyes

I’d love to see a very special edition of the Shpongle box set with prints etc and maybe a poster included?

They’ll be tracks of each of the 4 albums which never made it and imagine how good they will still sound. :?:
