Okay, this is probably a stupid question, but I was wondering:
What is really the difference between LIVE and DJ-Set in this genre?
I mean, obviously, for example at Brixton last year it was Younger Brother LIVE because they had a band and stuff, and Shpongle is LIVE this autumn. But I often see stuff like Hallucinogen, Ott and Prometheus LIVE but there weren’t any bands, it was just DJ set, or “press the play button” as Raja calls it.
So could someone explain to me what exactly differs the LIVE performances from the DJ-Set? Especially when both are listed at the same event to the same artist (such as Ott LIVE+Ott DJ Set at Further Gathering this year).
well, a live set means that the artist use a laptop that connects to a mixing desk and
every channel uses for a different sound, one is a bass, one is a kick , one is a synth ,
one is just a strange sound and so on…and he actually mix between them by pressing
buttons and sliders and there is lots of knobs for effects such as reverb, delay and
stuff and also filters and so on…. sometimes the artist also brings a synthesizer ,( one or two) and plays parts of the music live, and i’m sure that there are some more tricks that i don’t know
and as you said sometimes it’s a live set with a band
a dj set means that the artist have two CD players and they are connected to a dj mixer
which is smaller from the mixing desk and he just mix between the two players,
sometimes they also use a laptop or some external effects to spice it up a bit…
i’m sure that i didnt cover it all, or even 100 percent correctly but i think that these are
the basic stuff…
if they are playing a live set, they will be using software like Logic or Ableton, and it will have all the individual parts that make up a track, and they will mix it accordingly. it will all be sent to a mixer and tweeked and messed about with so it’s slightly different to the original recordings, they get to drop different bits in out and boost certain parts, playing live is much more hands on.
where as DJing either using decks or dj software itl just be a case of having the full track as it is on one deck, and a second track waiting to be played on the second deck.
much more love and effort goes into playing a live set, and you can genearally mix it up alot more.
yes, an electronic music artist can be a lot more creative when he plays a LIVE set.
and it’s a bit more expensive to the event organizer from a DJ set as well.
but a LIVE set is always more interesting ! !
I won’t dispute that!
I’ve seen them several times and it didn’t matter if they were playing to 2,000 people or 20, they were always stunning.
Can’t wait for the Shamania Festival to catch them again!
(I say them…it’s just Merv now, I gather.)
Forgot to mention Pitch Black, another masterful group at proper live acts.
You can watch a full recording of one of their concerts on moshcam:
They also have a walkthrough of how they play live on youtube which is pretty damn cool:
Have overtaken Ott as the masters of psychedelic dub IMO.
Those who are going to glade this year will be lucky enough to catch them if they havent already. I shall certainly be there
Have overtaken Ott as the masters of psychedelic dub IMO.
Blasphemers will hung by their toenails and flogged!
We will then proceed to choke you with rogue bagels, and drown you in the 382 Seaside.
yup…..
sorry ott, i still love you, but their latest album was better than skylon. and they have one of the best live acts going in the world of electronica so… hang me by my toenails
actually i prefer a live band like YB uses nowadays, they can stil keep it psychadelic using a bass player and a guitar player, always more fun to watch if your coming for the music… lets say i’d love to see Hallucinogen live performing with 2 or 3 more fellas (drums, synths , and even guitar…)
i totally agree with you !
a live show with a live band like YB and Hallucinogen in Dub is always much more fun and interesting to hear and see. the energy, atmosphere and emotions are always more powerful !
about the Hallucinogen live with 2 or 3 more people, i’m not really sure about it,
but it’s a nice thought though ...
