Hello,

currently, I am remixing a very old track (Datura - Devotion). Beside one female voice sample with a length around three seconds, the source of all the other sounds come from various hard- and software-synths. The notation of the bassline and one background loop is like on the original but based on my own MIDI-data with different sounds used there.

Do I need to ask the label where the original has been released for permission? It is for twisted sessions only.

Did a search on wikipedia and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remix#Copyright_Implications

it’s pretty vague though.

If it’s for twisted sessions, you have nothing to worry about. The only time copyrights are an issue is when you make money off of it.

But if you do by some how generate money from this track then I’d be very careful because a baseline being the same (even if you tweaked it) could probably be enough grounds to cause you trouble.

It’s best to ask them.
