For a long time I’ve kept things strictly hardware, but now that I have a decent computer I want to start giving software a shot.  Other than sequencers, I haven’t really been using much audio software for the past few years, so I’m a bit out of the loop.  Calx mentioned Reaktor which I’m gonna check out, and I’m really curious about Battery 2 cuz I seriously need drum sounds that I can manipulate.  Anyway, what other applications do people use/recommend?  Mac/Windows/whatever

I have to recommend both Battery 2 and Kontakt 2, if u have hardware u can sample the hell out of it with Kontakt, otherwise check out Linplug Albino, any other of the native instruments stuff and Smartelectronix a FANTASTIC :D freeware/donationware company, some of the best plugins outthere imo.
Other than that you should definalty try reaktor as Calx mentioned it is the daddy.

But at the end of the day depends what purpose u want your plugins to serve, bass synth, pads, good allrounder?
