My studio computer is in the shop right now.
So I had to install Live on a friend’s crap computer to make this.
9/5 Beat Sample
Basically you’re taking 9/5 and converting it to 7.2/4
(The same as taking…let’s say…6/8 and turning it to 3/4.)
That means you have 7 and 1/5 quarter notes per measure.
How do you count that extra 1/5?
Well, in music we have ‘triplets’. Everyone knows that.
But there’s also such things as ‘quintuplets’ and ‘septuplets’.
That extra 1/5 is counted as a quintuplet.
So, in order to make the beat “flow” more smoothly, you count the whole beat in quintuplets.
Now, there are a couple different ways to count quintuplets.
The best way I’ve found is:
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga…etc.
So, to count 7.2/4 (ie 9/5) you would go:
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga 4 a din a ga 5 a din a ga 6 a din a ga 7 a din a ga 8 |
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga 4 a din a ga 5 a din a ga 6 a din a ga 7 a din a ga 8 |
etc
Now, it sounds weird to immediately go from 8 to 1, so I add an extra syllable at the end of beat 7 instead.
This would go:
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga 4 a din a ga 5 a din a ga 6 a din a ga 7 a din a ga NA |
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga 4 a din a ga 5 a din a ga 6 a din a ga 7 a din a ga NA |
etc
Do keep in mind that the last NA is an extra beat.
Wish I could make some diagrams…but again…no computer at the moment…
