shpongle’s tracks time signature (odd time)

I guess that clears it up…. do you ever see time sigs like 7/3, 9/5 ?  All i know is i count the top number, and ignore the bottom number!! If it’s in my sequencer i’ll leave the bottom number set to 4… and if it’s jamming along, i’m either playing 8ths or triplets…. but i don’t have the skillz of a great jazz or classical performer…

it generally just goes “doof doof doof doof”... smile

It’s still seven ‘counts’ per measure.

It makes it more interesting when you count oddball timesigs differently.
Especially this 15/16 tune I’m working on.
“1 . & . 2 . & . 3 . & . 4 . &”

Okay, I understand now. I know for me that it’s more difficult to leave off the “&” in between 4 and the following 1 than it is for me to count a full 7 digits. I find myself slipping back into 4 time with the way you’re counting it there. But if it works then it works.

I guess that clears it up

the way i recognize simon as a music god its a bit funny to know something in music that he doesnt know…or he was being ironic?
btw, the previews are great! “Shpongolese Spoken Here” reggae feeling and delays are very…idk…makes me feel good! “Nothing Is Something Worth Doing” makes this to me too. i waaaant this album! oh, btw the new shpongle logo is beautiful. =D

Made a beat in 9/5 once…
Hella weird. Wouldn’t want to do a whole song with it.
Sequencers won’t line it up, so you have to do it manually.

I’d very much like to hear this. What did it even take to manually line up a sequencer so that each beat was one fifth of a whole note?

My studio computer is in the shop right now.
So I had to install Live on a friend’s crap computer to make this.

9/5 Beat Sample

Basically you’re taking 9/5 and converting it to 7.2/4
(The same as taking…let’s say…6/8 and turning it to 3/4.)
That means you have 7 and 1/5 quarter notes per measure.

How do you count that extra 1/5?
Well, in music we have ‘triplets’. Everyone knows that.
But there’s also such things as ‘quintuplets’ and ‘septuplets’.
That extra 1/5 is counted as a quintuplet.
So, in order to make the beat “flow” more smoothly, you count the whole beat in quintuplets.

Now, there are a couple different ways to count quintuplets.
The best way I’ve found is:
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga…etc.
So, to count 7.2/4 (ie 9/5) you would go:
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga 4 a din a ga 5 a din a ga 6 a din a ga 7 a din a ga 8 |
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga 4 a din a ga 5 a din a ga 6 a din a ga 7 a din a ga 8 |
etc

Now, it sounds weird to immediately go from 8 to 1, so I add an extra syllable at the end of beat 7 instead.
This would go:
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga 4 a din a ga 5 a din a ga 6 a din a ga 7 a din a ga NA |
1 a din a ga 2 a din a ga 3 a din a ga 4 a din a ga 5 a din a ga 6 a din a ga 7 a din a ga NA |
etc

Do keep in mind that the last NA is an extra beat.

Wish I could make some diagrams…but again…no computer at the moment…

Really cool stuff Cloudwalker. I’m curious as to how you got a sequencer to play nicely with an irrational signature, but perhaps some sequencers allow for that sort of thing.

IMO Music theory is all a bunch of bullshit.
All it does is set up musical and mental barriers.  oh oh
