we just did a younger brother track in 9/8 - THAT was a headfuck!
I love 7/8 sounds very cyclical and natural if you get the beat right… and awkward if not…. my favourite beat to play on a drumkit, for sure…
5/4 also good if you have a nice riff….
4/4 and 6/8 are so easy with computers….
by the way, does anyone know what the lower number means? what’s the difference between 7/8 and 7/4 ?

Awesome. My friends and I are obsessed with figuring out odd time signatures, and once had an extremely long discussion over the time signature changes in DMT and My head feels like a frisbee. Once the new YB album is released and I figure out which track is in 9/8, I’m gonna quiz my friends to see if they can figure it out.

On a related note, this page is very interesting and I’ve spent a lot of time looking through the songs. Its cool to see ones you recognize and then go “oh yea!” when you hear the time sig.

One regret I have is not learning anything about musical theory. Instead, I’ve picked up parts over the years from playing in bands and with different instruments and whatnot.

I wish I learned more. whenever i’m jamming and people start mentioning time signatures I have to listen to how they play it first before I start. Haha, Oh well.

If you want to play the same thing as before, a 1/2nd note will be 2 counts, a 1/4th note is 1 count.

What about the time signature in Electroplasm ?
I believe it is a compound meter 3/4 + 3/4 + 2/4 + 2/4 + 2/4 + 2/4
that is 3/4 twice and 2/4 four times, although I think sometimes it is only 2/4 three times??

so it is basically in 10/4
what do you think?

I don’t have the full track of Electroplasm yet (still waiting on the CD to show), but it the sample on the home page sounds like it’s in 7 to me. Whether it’s 7/4 or 7/8 or 7/16 is unknowable and not really important.

Nothing lasts, shnitzled in the negev and but nothing is lost is in 7/8 aswell, right?
(Those three tracks are btw the absolute culmination of music in my ears smile )

Speaking of odd time signatures..
Meshuggah - New Millenium Cyanid Christ
Not my kind of music really, but impressive time signatures nonetheless.

Wikipedia.
The song, in typical Meshuggah fashion, applies various poly-metrical changes throughout the song, though the song as a whole is firmly rooted in an altogether standard time signature of 4/4, which is shown mainly through the consistent cymbal and snare pattern in the drum track throughout the song. Any unconventional rhythms within the guitars therefore end up conforming to this traditional time signature. Ignoring the standard metre of the drums, though, and solely concentrating on the guitars would give these results:

The intro riff is five measures of 23/16 and one of 13/16.
The verse is 9 measures of 3/8 and one measure of 5/8.
The passage from the lyrics “Self-inflicted fractures” changes to 3/4, 9/16, 3/4, 9/16, 3/4, 5/8
The passage from the lyrics “Baptized in vitriolic acid” and the guitar solo alternates between 7/16 and 9/16
The passage from the lyrics “Disciples” changes to a 4/4 rhythm, which can be seen as a 4/4, 3/4, 5/5, 4/4 pattern.
The ending riff is 6/8, 8/8, 6/8, 8/8, 4/8 (which all adds up to 32/8, and could be divided into four 4/4 measures)

This is why I love Meshuggah smile  So if I’m understanding this correctly, the Meshuggah song is in 4/4 but the guitar is able to play around within this frame work?  For example, if you played in 9/8 and then switched to 7/8 that is still 16 total beats making it fit into a 4/4 rhythm.  Is this what they are doing here?  If that’s the case, making a seemless time change, such as Meshuggah and Shpongle are able to do, could be accomplished by sequencing a song in 4/4 but changing your individual patterns into variations within 4/4?

Sorry if this isn’t making much sense, I just got back from playing around on the computer after reading this thread trying to figure out the transition around 2:40ish in DMT and it has my head reeling, plus I’m running on an empty stomach haha.  It’s tough to try to comprehend this type of thing when you don’t fully understand but I think I’m starting to get it.  That DMT time change has like one or two things I’m not quite getting right though and it’s making me go nuts.  I understand it basically goes from 4/4 to 6/8 but the little nuances of it are really what brings out the seemlessness of it all I think.  I didn’t even consider the song had a time change in it until I read it on here so that’s pretty well handled if you ask me haha.

Edit: I also love Nothing Lasts, Schnitzl’d in the Negev and ...But Nothing Is Lost as well and I also had no idea it was in 7/8 lol.  My second favorite Shpongle moment right after ...And The Day Turned To Night smile

Yes, that’s atleast what I try to do when i’m hopelessly trying to work with really ood time-signatures in sequencers; trying to fit it into the frameworks of more conventional time-signatures, such as 4/4, 3/4 and 7/8, and do the weird time signatures manually until it adds up into whole bars.

Working on something in 17/21 atm.. Haha if I manage to get this to sound remotely organic and flowing, i’ll be impressed with myself raspberry
