Hey guys,

What do you guys use as reference studio monitors? Anything to recommend in a price range around 500$ ? I’m currently hesitating between mackie mr8 and m-audio bx8a which both seem to have similar features and characteristics and cost more or less the same…

Thanx!

Cheers

Both of those would be great budget monitors. I’ve been using the older BX8’s for about 7 years now without any problems. The Mackie MR8’s look decent for the price and they seem to have good reviews. If you can purchase both locally and return the set you don’t like as much then take both sets home and do some A/B testing and see which set works best with your ears and room. Most people don’t know this but almost 70-80% of the sound you hear from your monitors actually comes from the room reflections and not just the monitors. That’s why good sound engineers don’t use the standard equilateral triangle method to set them up.

If you haven’t read this book yet then PLEASE get a copy. It’s one of the best things I ever did and it’s changed the way my studio is setup and how I record and mix. Highly recommended!!!

second the bx8as. theyre really clean and flat throughout but start to lose their clarity a bit before 40hz. thats why i’ll prolly end up getting the sbx10 sub too go along with them

i suggest against those. the mackie mr8s being the most truthful though.

i recommend the Blue Sky Exo setup. 2.1 system for about $300. more truthful than any of the other monitors mentioned, PLUS A SUB! fucking sounds AMAZING. i’ve been using them for years now. plus, amazing customer service/support.

i have these and are very nice and accurate.

If I could do it again though, i would look into Dynaudio BM5a or BM6A mkII.

Yep, i have these monitors too, and i have to say that i dont regret buying them at all - really smooth sound, accurate - and besides that, they look really neat and fancy. wink

Recommend these ones!
