Destroying music?

If it weren’t for a couple of randomly downloaded torrents I don’t know if I would have ever discovered Shpongle, never mind the considerable group of people who I’ve exposed to the music since.

I listened to this whole leaked song and I don’t feel like the experience was any less significant than if I’d waited until I had the CD in my hands. Hell, it’s been a pretty outstanding morning and I’d say the track perfectly framed the day.

Oh, and I already put in an order for the new cd a few days back, direct from twisted. When my next paycheck comes in I’ll even be ordering a few more copies for some special people in my life.

The times have changed. The technology has changed. The music has changed. If all you see is bad then maybe its time to try a new perspective.

I see alot of bad and a little good.

It’s all very well having new ways of reaching people, but those people have to find you in a vast ocean of sound. “Random downloads” benefits almost nobody.  hmmm

Random downloads led me to Shpongle and Hallucinogen.  Some random fan site mentioned a few albums by various artists, and I got on whatever file sharing network (probably Napster or WinMX) and downloaded Tales of the Inexpressible.  Now I own that, Nothing… and a Hallucinogen album, and I’m impatiently waiting for the new CD and DVD to be delivered.  All of the music that I’ve purchased in the past 8 years or so is all stuff that I first downloaded.  Illegal? Definitely.  Immoral?  Yes, but that was my only way of finding new music to listen to at the time.  Now with Pandora I can hear other music I’ve never heard before without breaking copyright law, and I’ve added more CD’s to my list of things to buy.

Very sad.  For someone who has been collecting the actual CDs of Goa for years, it’s sad to see that any 14 year old with an ISP can steal the art I have been supporting for 15 years.
