I love when people follow me from site to site trying to disparage me. Thank you for being my biggest fan, frostbyte. smile

Not that anyone actually listens to our disparagement…

Honestly I hate this guy but you people continuously knocking Ultimae is begining to get on my wick, as I said I love Shpongle and a few others from the Twisted retinue but imho they don’t beat anything Ultimae has come up with. What is important about this statement is not that I think they are better but that it’s my bloody opinion, just as it’s yours that Shpongle rocks. As you’ve told the troll over and over again it’s all down to personal taste. God I hate myself for being drawn into this thing but Okyup is not the one that is driving me round the bend; it’s other people’s reaction to it when they mimic his exact attacking strategy. He’s repeated this same argument enough times now to know what gets people riled and you’re just playing into his hands. Show mr Posford some respect by not lowering yourselves to the trolls standards and throwing this hateful shite right to the top of the forum’s most read.

... And by the way, next summer I’m gonna paint my room’s walls to the same color as your studio has. I like that color, its warm and snug. ....

Taking fandom to a whole new level!

Twisted Records is one of the most commercial psy labels, yet they are the only psy label to stoop to crying publicly about not selling enough CDs. Better to spend your money supporting smaller labels and emerging artists that really have money problems. Twisted already sells thousands of each CD, they will hardly notice it if you just download their music in high quality instead.

Hello everyone, hello Simon smile

So I read the 22 pages of the thread and I got pretty irritated by the troll. I just feel sorry for the people who answered to him but now he’s gone, I feel better.

Simon, I got pretty sad when I read about the harm that can cause illegal file-sharing to you. I’ve been doing it since years and years and even helping on a forum of a well-known P2P program. I could not realized it was so harmful for an artist until now because I love so much Shpongle. I discovered it totally randomly (on radioblog club, illegal, yes) and directly got hypnotized by the sound, the variety and the quality of this masterpiece. I don’t need to tell you how great is Shpongle, it just that I can’t find the words to express my feelings towards this particular music.

I’m a bit surprised and also confused that Shpongle is not known that much compared to others genres/projects. I found it a but shameful and I try to play the songs at some parties, just to make discoveries. Some liked, some did not but I did not ask for more, I just wanted to show something original and unique. That what I think your baby is made for. I have the opportunity to travel a lot and most often when I met totally unknown/random people the shpongle topic pops-up…and it’s a way to understand the people in front of me, each other. Also it’s how I met my girl in the USA…

I’d like apologize for stealing your album but it will be hypocritical to do so. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to be disrespectful to you, it’s just that it’s for me hypocritical. Also because “I was born” in this environment, I haven’t bought CDs since 10 years. I worked on the issue and it’s still a hot topic. I read/heard everything about it but I’ve never seen a solution emerging. So I guess it’s too late (question mark).

However, I go every 2/3 months to concerts (mostly abroad, here in France we don’t get this music easily) and I was planning to attempt the one at the end of the month but I can’t. Maybe Russia. I got several merchandises that I wear proudly. It’s the way how I support an artist, the way I belong to the Shpongle family. Really, it’s a way for me to meet you and I can’t wait for the next opportunity.

I’d like to know more about the financial condition. I know it’s business oriented and sometimes it can be antagonist to Art in general but really I’ve never understood why Shpongle does not have the chance to be known elsewhere than here. I read very little paper about Shpongle, almost none. Shpongle lacks notoriety. I don’t know how the record label is organized, I suppose it’s a team of skilled people that know how to launch an album and sell it. But why do we never hear about Shpongle? For me it’s very frustrating because it’s just unfair! In a way, it makes the music harder to get accepted towards larger audiences. Shpongle is not elitist! Shpongle awesomeness is a bit spoiled by this lack of notoriety. I wish we could have the tools to make discover Shpongle to a broader audience. Fans have a role to play and you seem to understand this need thanks to the Twisted Street Team. By the way how is it going on that project?

Concerning the return on money of Roundhouse,

Wow, I am saddened and angered to hear about the leak.  The lack of respect is shameful.  I certainly hope Twisted can weather the storm.  I know I can always count on some groundbreaking music from you guys.  I have absolutely no interest in listening to the inferior leaked music - I can easily wait for the proper release.  The samples are more than enough to pique my interest (though I have to be careful not to play it out before I even get the cd!).

Simon, I don’t doubt that you are hurt and angry over all this and I don’t blame you.  I can tell you and Raj put a lot of passion into the new album and you are obviously proud of it.  An early leak with poor quality will no doubt hurt your exposure and sales, but I sure hope that things work out for you guys.  Shpongle has been an incredible influence on me and it truly defines me musically.  So to do my part, I just spent a hundred bucks to pick up some new cds and a t-shirt.  I can’t wait for them to arrive!  smile

Don’t ever stop making music!

hi there,
i scanned briefly through most of the postings in this thread so pardon me if i missed some parts and that thing i’m about to ask had already been brought forward:
now that the new album is ‘available’ why not release it at twisted downloads?
the way it is now people who chose to illegally download the album are rewarded with it but honest ones are punished for not having it.
i personally don’t think it would interfere with the originally planned release after the roundhousegig. i’m old-school so i don’t think it would interfere with the real release of physical mediums at the roundhouse. anyway i’ll get my precious copy at the roundhouse.
of course i downloaded the album (and it’s awesum!!! btw each time i hear that effect after the vocals say ‘it’s shpongle back again’ in ‘backwards through..’ i have to smile widely) but i would feel way better (and i’m sure i’m not the only one) if i listened to a legal copy.
cheers

@ Twisted records——what about licensing a twisted track to a movie, commercial, or anything of that nature?

This brings in money and brings in tens of thousands more people into awareness of the music. Two birds with one stone.

good art deserves our support if we wish for the good artists to continue in their path…

if we devalue good music by taking it for free then we will simply lose it in the long run.

i’ll be buying a copy when it comes out.

and maybe a few for my friends

Well I’ll be damned; after checking in here once in a while for the past several years, I’ve finally registered!

I have not heard the new album, nor do I intend to do so until it shows up in my mailbox. I pre-ordered as soon as I got the newsletter announcing it. I’ve cleared my schedule for when the album arrives, and look forward to listening to it far, far away from my computer, preferably outside (which reminds me; next time, you really ought to release during the summer, it’s freezing as hell outside here at this time of year, and I don’t know any place more suited for a visit to Sphongleland than deep in the forest! :p).

Anyway, I’m sorry to hear that the finances at twisted ain’t what it should be, and I guess I can relate to how much it sucks, at least on some level. I work for a tiny indy game studio, so I know a thing of two about putting a lot of effort, soul and passion into something, and getting barely enough to cover bills in return. I guess that’s the trade off for doing something one actually love, instead of having a “real” job. wink

I have done a naughty thing though, I actually copied my original Sphongle albums for my father a while back. It was sort of a payback, since he introduced me to psy-stuff some 15 years ago. I did buy him the originals shortly after though, so my conscious is at least partly clean. He loved it by the way, and so did his crazy hippie friends. wink

Stay Sphongled,
- DM

Hi all,
Interesting (though not new) discussion.

here’s something I think is relevant that I wrote originally upon request for Revolve magazine in the UK about two years ago. I’d appreciate it if you give 5 minutes of your time to read and think about it:

Should we buy our music?

A question everyone with a computer faces these days is should I buy my music or should I just download it for free. Every musical piece that exists these days (and even some that don’t) is available for download for free through myriad of ways. So should we buy our music? As someone who’s been buying music and getting it in other ways for a long time, and as someone who has a label and is involved very much in our small alternative musical scene I want to offer some insights.

Let’s go back in time

I’m all for downloading low-quality music and then buying the album if you like it.

So when you are a record label like Twisted and you want to form an opinion on digital downloads… You have to ask yourself the question: “Is the sum of all these fans, who download our music digitally (and for free) and occasionaly buy an album or merchandise which they really like and who might visit our live-show, worth more than the (much smaller) sum of fans who has no choice but to buy our album after they miraculously heard from us?” I don’t know the answer, but I tend to say it’s “yes”. I think most of you will agree with me.

Anyhow, I must say that I also don’t like leaks before the album has really come out… It’s just kind of lame..

It’s all very well to speculate, but i can tell you as a fact, we made more money before file sharing… we could survive… now not so…. and i think you will find it the same all over the music business… the argument that “file sharing is promotion” is probably valid…. in fact, i agree…in a way it serves a similar purpose to radio…. but the argument that “file sharing is promotion and therefore you will sell more CDs” is clearly absolute bollocks, otherwise the music industry would be booming right now!
And why you draw our attention to ‘the long tail’ curve mystifies me:  sure amazon can make a lot of money by selling huge quantities from a vast catalogue…. that would work for twisted too, if we had signed 18 million artists….and each CD sold a few dozen copies… unfortunately we have only 3 or 4 artists right now, so the ‘long tail’ is irrelevant to us, clearly… we might have contributed 30 bucks or so to Amazon’s $207 MILLION profit (figures posted for 2008)....
Also i’m sorry that “And if it weren
