So I got the Shpongle DVD in the mail today iwth my CD. Unfortunately, I live in the states and the DVD is in PAL format so I can’t watch it. Unless someone can come up with a good work around (I tried a DVD player, computer, and PS3) I need to return my copy, if not both copies I ordered (one for a friend).

Any ideas?

I thought that computer players didn’t care about PAL or NTSC as it’s a TV signal standard.

Perhaps there’s a setting in the player program?

Are you using an HDTV with multiple resolutions or a standard TV?

If you’re using HDMI cables then you must be using an HDTV.  I was hoping to watch the DVD via my PS3 on my big Bravia, but it now looks like I’ll have to reconnect my gaming PC to it.  Oh well.

Here’s hoping you find the issue with your PCs DVD-ROM.  You might want to try using another DVD-ROM drive, perhaps you have an older one in a box somewhere?

So cruel!  LOL

The inability to watch the Shpongle DVD while its in your hand is not an experience I’d wish upon anyone.

There is no reason it shouldn’t work in your computer unless the DVD is bad. It could likely be missing codecs, I recommend downloading k-lite codec pack standard, which also gives you media player classic which is much less invasive than windows media player 11. http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm <—the link (duh)

Ooo yeah.  I forgot to mention, I do have cccp codec pack installed.

(I think it’s better than k-lite)

Is there any hoping for a NTSC release of the DVD?
If PAL is played in the U.S. the frame rate ratio is wacked and without a compatible release the only place to play it is on a computer.

Here are a couple things that may help:
-install a different dvd player on your computer such as VLC/MPC/generic program.  i recall having some sort of issue between my video card, TV, Windows xp, and Media Player Classic because my video card wasn’t HDCP compliant
-update the firmware for your dvd drive, drivers for your video card
-download a program that removes the copy protection and copies the dvd to your computer, assuming you have the hard drive space.  What you needs is a program to decrypt dvd’s, a “DVD Decrypter” if you will.  This is probably legal where you are, so long as you don’t burn copies for other people.  Also, Simon will probably hunt you down if you do.

(may have said too much?)
