Something new and fresh has been needed on the London dance scene for a long time and the launch of Rock & Rave at the Fridge last Saturday night proved to be exactly that. The concept was simple: take some of the freshest rock bands around and play them alongside the biggest names in dance music — DJmag Top 100 DJs Skazi headlined with London hard rock band King Lizard, with psy trance, techno, electro, minimal and minimal psy all putting in an appearance. The result: one of the best parties London has seen in a long time with the friendliest most up for it crowd braving the elements of the most extreme storm of the year to make this the beginning of something very special…
This Friday we’re back for round two, with fanatical French psy trance musician Talamasca of Mind Control Records playing live, a full live show from Reading band Counterpoint, the enigmatic Mr Youth (live), Transient’s trance legends Kristian, Nick & Nikki Sentience (live), Mechanimal (live) and DJ sets from psy trancers E303 vs Zeus, Compressor, Kristian, Monster, Etnarama and Lorenzo. The Underground Floor in Room 2 features Diego CK, Techno Notice, Zwezd@, E303, DJ Kito, DJ Roo, DJ Novia, Quincy Me, Mac Loud and D-Viant — expect the unexpected! Plus there’s mind-bending visuals in the main room from VJ Baby K and performances from the Kwalilox Crew and Trancel8rs bring that festival feel to the party.
Mind Control Records maverick Cedric Dassulle aka DJ Lestat aka Talamasca is a prolific artist who has helped define the genre of psy trance, having made over 150 tracks. Yet few of his fans know that he actually started out in the rock scene, making him the perfect headliner for Rock’n’Rave. As he explains: “Before 1992, I was listening to heavy metal, and believed that electronic music was not music. Fortunately, my friend who I was with in school, DJ Mael Aka Nomad, put me one day in a big rave party and I realised then the “power” of this music.”
Reading up-and-comings Counterpoint are going to blow you away with their full live show. In the year they’ve been together they’ve already made No. 2 in the MySpace rock charts and have just released their EP ‘Nine Lives’, featuring the singles ‘Can’t Breath’ and ‘Nine Lives’. They’re currently working on their new album and this Friday sees them playing their latest upfront tracks.
Who is Mister Youth? The Deadmau5 of psy trance makes his London debut and is definitely not to be missed!
Finally, dance music legend Nick Sentience teams up with Nikki S (one of the UK’s leading female psy trance acts and DJ Mag Top Tip of 2008 who brought you such nights as Extreme Euphoria & Innovate) and Kristian (part of Dejavoo, one of the UK’s top psy trance acts) in re-launching the legendary Transient Records. Over the years Transient has been home to some of the world’s biggest psy names and is hugely respected on the global psy scene. Nick Sentience, Nikki S, Kristian & Mechanimal will be giving a sneak preview of what’s to come from Transient in 2010.
