I have to second the suggestions both for Spirited Away and Dolls. These 2 movies are nothing short of masterpieces to me, as they’ve moved me in ways very few movies have.
And while we’re on Japanese ground, I’d like to recommend the following ones:

* Cat Soup . As cheesy as the tagline ( “It’s Hello Kitty on acid!” ) on the back of the DVD is, and as I rarely like to use the line “the creators really have been high on something” when describing movies or series out of the ordinary, these 2 lines fit very well with this short movie.

* Spring and Chaos . “The life story of Kenji Miyazawa”, one of the Japan’s most beloved poets of the 20th century…or rather, a stunningly beautiful look on how he perceived the world around him and how it was reflected in his poetry and novels.

* Arjuna . You can’t mention Shoji Kawamori (who directed Spring and Chaos) without mentioning Arjuna, a 13 episode TV series, and in my opinion the best of his works. Not really psychedelic or surreal per se (although it does include a few rather trippy sequences with nature bursting full into life), but rather a series which isn’t afraid of pointing out what’s wrong with our current lifestyle and how this planet of ours is suffering. Some people might say that it’s overly preachy, but I like the way it drives (or rather, forces) its points across. As if that wouldn’t be enough, it also features one of the best soundtracks, ever.

* Night on the Galactic Railroad . Another absolutely mindblowing voyage through space and existence. Based on one of Kenji Miyazawa’s most famous books. The DVD has been sold out for quite some time now, so you can consider yourself lucky if you can find a copy if it anywhere.

Exactly!
He had me quaking and in awe at the size and power of his ego the first time I watched that film, though the hundreds of liberty caps may have had something to do with it being such a powerful experience.

3 - Pi (crazy mathematics!!!! - grat movie)
4 - Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind (...)
5 - Arizona dream (johnny depp again!!! smile )
6 - The Jacket (it’s not the classic one, but the one they you wear in a mental institute..!)

[quote author=“psyclone”]There are the trippy Beatles movies: Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour.  Pretty far out and keeps it easy with the jams.

Yeah man Magical Mystery Tour is great to watch if you have an urge to watch something during. You ever watched it sober. OMG possibly one of the worst visual displays shot on camera. However after you have paid a visit to number….. ‘25’ the film is pure artistic genius. The trees in the background are singing in I am the Walrus, really nice dreamy trippy scene when McCartney is singing Fool on the Hill. The finale your Mother should know leavesd you with a happy smile on your face and maybe uttering the words Wow.

The Wall obvious choice.

However here’s a good one, on my last visit to….. ‘25’ I was alone in my apartment and was chilling with the sounds of Pink Floyd live in Pompeii. After it I went to change music and put some Sienis on to begin with, something I knew I would like. Sienis never fails me that way. I put on the Milk Drop visualiser in Winamp and was captivated by it for ages.

If you look at it long enough you get to see how the mathematics of this program is linked to the mathematics of the universe. So basically understanding the maths of universe. At this moment something made sense right then. I’m now trying to dechiper it now I’m back in our 3D 5 sense frequency world. I

So there you are Winamp Visualiser Milk Drop

[quote author=“ckm000”]nice topic smile

but NOT urotsukidoji: legend of the overfiend

Ooh yeah, that movie was fucked up. I think if you were tripping while watching that your head would maybe explode.

I like:
The Who’s Tommy
Pi,
The Trip
Casshern (the live-action version of the anime series. Incredibly fast-paced and trippy, and also a bit confusing the first (and second) time)

Well I’d say the most recent one I’ve seen was “The Fountain”

Simply amazing.

For all fans of Requiem for a Dream and Pi, director Darren Aronofsky is back and just as good as he always was.

At least I thought it was awesome.

Anyone else see it?

Cat Soup is mind blowing. Trippy, disturbing, deep, confusing, all in just over half an hour.
