The Downward Spiral and The Fragile by NIN are among the finest produced albums of all time IMO. Easily the best recorded and engineered material in the 90s considering the complexity.

I’m still being stunned while listening more into Don Peyotes ‘Peyote Dreaming’. again I wouldn’t say ‘better’, but it’s got both playful experiments with psychedelic sound as well as a very refined musicality. And it’s been mastered good too.

cheers for the suggestions. i’ve been thinking about this, but maybe ‘sound engineering’ describes better what i’m referring to. or does that leave it just as vague?

I guess what we’re aiming at is a combination of psychedelic creativity, good music and patient sound engineering. If it were just the last, we end up with Quincy Jones or even Timbaland…

Maybe more like William Orbit, Brian Eno, Nigel Godrich. Not quite all the way as psychedelic as twisted productions, but still a good mix of above qualities.

I was wondering if anyone could direct me to some music/album that is better produced than Shpongle. By that I mean more textured, crisper sounding, and hence more psychedelic.

I’ve heard a few albums recently which come close, but you rarely hear the depth of sounds found in Shpongle.

Any suggestions?

Maybe you just need a better amplifier and speakers/headphones?
I’m not kidding - most consumer equipment will not give you the sound experience that the sound engineer who mastered the Shpongle tracks was having.
You don’t need hyper-expensive equipment, a good hifi cd player, a quality stereo amplifier for roughly 300 euro and headphones for ~100 Euro will absolutely do the job. Good speakers will be a little more than the headphones (like 300-500 euro).

If you don’t have equipment like this, you cannot judge the production value of a CD.
