So I attended the recent Atlanta Shpongle date, my second time seeing Simon (the first being May 2009 at the same venue). The opener Chris Grass, later joined by some percussionists and Charlie P, was enjoyable although I wish they had played for less time. After well over two hours of them I was a bit sick of it and more than ready for Simon to come on. I expected him to be on late as he was last year, but to be honest I really wish Simon would come on an hour earlier so I wouldn’t be so fucking tired by the end of the show. I actually dipped out before the encore as I had a 45 minute drive home.
Anyway on to Simon’s set, I liked the lighting/screen setup. Last time around they didn’t have the screens and they were a nice addition. The dancers didn’t really bring anything new to the table but still add to the excitement of the show. As for the music, I enjoyed hearing the newer songs off Ineffable Mysteries but I was then a bit disappointed after Simon went into a long segment of repeat songs from last year’s performance. Not only that, but they were played in the same order. I wrote down what I knew of the setlist (see below) and basically everything from Dorset Perception through Divine Moments of Truth was the same as it was last year. I was however very happy to hear Star Shpongled Banner as it is one of my favorites. A New Way To Say Hooray is also a favorite of mine but it was unfortunately very brief, maybe only thirty seconds worth of the intro before he cut into another song.
Overall I’d say I enjoyed the show but some of the fun was just lost on me after seeing basically an hour’s worth of repeat material. If anyone can fill in anymore of the setlist (particularly the encore), please post it. Also towards the end of the show some dude obviously tripping to hard got onto the stage. He proceeded to tear his shirt off and some security guards tried to remove him. Not sure what exactly the trouble was as I couldn’t exactly see from my vantage point, but he was laying on the ground for a minute or two and they couldn’t seem to get him off stage. Simon came over to try and help him at one point before giving up and shrugging his shoulders. Later on he asked for the kid’s friends to go help him as he “probably needs his friends right now.”
