Hey smile
I’ve been looking for a portable “sample recorder” but I’m not sure which way to go.
Been looking at Roland R-05, M-Audio Micro Track II and Zoom H4n
I really like that the H4n has mic inputs so i can record with my own mics if i want to. But it is any useful? Hope you have any inputs/experiences to share with me smile

Looking around for one myself nowadays. Zoom is coming out with H1 now which supposedly is very good and quite cheap. Otherwise I’ll go with the H2 probably, as i dont have a separate mic.

The Roland. By far.
I tried 3 or 4 recorders (tascam, m-audio, etc), and returned them all.
Until I settled on the Edirol (Roland) R-09hr.

It’s the best sounding, the easiest to use, and better in every way than the other options.
The only diff I see between the new Roland R05 and the Edirol is the lack of a remote.

In some of my tracks:
-The water fx throughout magma dragoon. I set it by a little stream up in the woods to record.
-the “sparkley sweep” fx in dragoon were a pair of kitchen wisks I recorded.

-The piano in OniapExperiment1 was recorded with the edirol.

-In the DttbiSample…those “liquideous metal clangs” were metal bowls set up in my kitchen sink.

I use a Zoom H4N…. very happy with it.

in-built mics are decent, and ability to plug in your own is awesome

ditto, it’s brilliant.
and for an added bonus everyone on the street thinks I’m going to taser them with it.

Just bought a Zoom H4N, really nice, though the user interface is a bit tedious. The quality is really good. Like it so far.

Well.. I got the Roland R-05 in the mail today, I’ve tried out a couple of recordings and read the manual etc and I have to say I already love it smile It’s perfect for my use. I don’t know much about the other players though :/
