I just wanna know what albums in this genre people consider defining and groundbreaking. I mean there are obvious one like Twisted, JR’s Transmissions (which i only got know btw), and maybe the Koxbox debut. But what are some other ones. Do the debut albums by Doof and Cosmosis count as defining in any way?

“Shpongle - Are You Shpongled” was definitely groundbreaking in that it sparked the whole “ethnic sounds” deal, and not just in psy-chill - which in itself was defined by “The Infinity Project - Mystical Experiences” (earliest fully psy-chill album I can find). Could also look for the first “Full on” album (which may be just the various album called “Full on”) and the first “Dark Psy” album… That’s taking “groundbreaking” defined as “inspiring a whole new movement/flow” of course.

Even though they were breaking away from the psytrance scene, I think the Son Kite albums (especially Colours) were some of the trippiest + masterfully produced albums.

The very first Iboga compilation, Tabernanthe, was also pointing in a totally new direction, and if you listen to a track like Oryx “Once Upon a Time” tell me that ain’t as good as it gets, and it’s over ten years old.

Flying Rhino Black Rhino (solid and features one of the best tracks ever, Slinky Wizard “Fistfull of Mutants”- who’s with me on this?)

Pretty much anything from Blueroom (like the Infinity Project album mentioned above), but I’ll go with Saafi Brothers Mystical Cigarettes.

TIP Feeling Weird (“They were like noises, noises coming from the darkness, strange, like a whisper”)

Matsuri Witchcraft by Sandman

Twisted (god do I have to pick one?) Dementertainment

For me it’s sad that my experience of the music back in the day was just at parties, we just couldn’t get the releases here, all of the music was brought over by Japanese DJs on DATs. Some of the tracks really blew me away and I’d ask the DJ- Quirk’s Dark Matter, Montauk P’s Turn the Page, Morphem’s Hypnotone, X Dream’s Out Here We Are Stoned and The Frog…

Half with you on this smile what about lunar juice from slinky wizard as well. For me this one is like of the highlights of goa trance smile

But still, all of this is more 90’s goa than psy isn’t it?

Yay! 100 posts Generix! (Been on the board a long time…)

You might be right about that, I’m not too savvy with distinctions like that. But when I got into the music, Psychedelic Trance and Goa Trance were pretty interchangeable. I remember when people started calling it Psytrance and that was like the hip thing. I admit these picks go back a ways, so it would be cool for somebody (hint hint) to maybe fast forward a list by about five years. What about stuff like Loud or Mute?

Jonas, I’d still recommend you check out the stuff I mentioned…
