I have loved Shpongle ever since it was born. One of the first things I noticed, loved, and have since studied, is it’s full-spectrum palette of sounds and it’s incredibly intricate, refined, otherworldy, and masterfully woven song structures. I say this from sixteen years of listening intently to Shpongle on a weekly basis, without exotic chemical assistance. I consider myself rather well versed in the techno spectrum, and I feel comfortable writing that Shpongle is a crowning achievement amongst human beings for unbridled creativity and unparalleled style in manipulating sound. I emotionally love Shpongle for it’s moods, as they correspond to my personal inner workings; sometimes playful, down-tempo, or romantic, and sometimes frightening, alien, or all out sensory overload. Logically, I admire Shpongle for it’s complexity in compilation and harmony. What is it about Shpongle that strikes you to your core? Do you visualize anything? Do you filter out rhythms while you listen? I am genuinely interested to read what anyone has to say about one of the projects of our time, and all time.

Welcome to the forum. Great enthusiasm, but unless you’ve got some unreleased demos in your stash, I don’t believe Shpongle’s been around 16 years. First album was released in ‘98. And if it’s gush you want, you’ve got enough reading in the Shpongle forum alone to occupy you for a while. wink

I like how complex it is, but I can’t stand world music. The only time I’ve ever been able to stand any kind of world music was in the Metroid Prime soundtrack.

I have an issue calling Shpongle World Music. World Music in a genreless genre. Every type of music played around the world fits into its own genre, whether contemporary or classical, and it’s a disservice to call them World Music. And it sounds so simpy and bullsh!t if you ask me, essentially Deep Forest or Enigma. That ain’t Shpongle.

World music is just using instruments from a certain culture. Shpongle uses Sitars, African drums, etc. It makes use of World music.

Like is it Rhumba, Gamelan, Bossa Nova, Mento, Calypso, Tuvan Throat Singing, Ragga, Khyal, Karnati, Township Jive, Soukous, Gnawa, Reggae, Dub, Kwaito, Samba, Salsa, Afrocubanismo, Tango, Merengue, Mariachi, Strathspey, Country Blues, Bluegrass, Qawali, Pungmul, Jali, or is it like George Harrison playing a sitar in 1968?

I can’t wait to respond to this topic when I have more time.  OP, I definitely know what you mean and have such intense feelings about Shpongle and the soundscapes they create for me!

I think you summed up Shpongle perfectly for me it’s not world music but sits by itself in it’s own category of genius really. grin

It’s magic, that is what it is. I have been wondering about something that happened on Thursday night, one minute I was just dancing away minding my own business and that, the next I was transported off on ‘holiday’ and was ‘raving my head off’, and I wasn’t the only one, Raja had cast a spell, that is the only explanation I can think of anyway. Shpongle for president of the universe smile and beyond
