It’s fun to see everyone’s approach and take on an album like this.
Some people dive right in and listen to it nonstop on repeat.
Some take it gradually…listening occasionally, working their way through it.
Others wait for the ‘ideal’ moment, listen to it once, then stash it away. Not to be listened to again…for a very long time.
I think these ‘diverse approaches’ of the audience define a true masterpiece…
I completely agree with you. Your post made me smile.
Well after 6 listens its up there for me, a few faster tracks than on Blumencraft and Skylon, the production is pristine. Cant wait to have the CD in my mits. Over all its pretty dam impressive.
Does anyone know the recording technique used from 6:22 - 6:40?
It’s sort of like a flanger on the backbeat, but also sounds like it’s somewhat muffled and coming in and out of definition.
During the live show, Ott also had a slider at the bottom of his workstation that seemed as if it was programmed with this effect…but I don’t know exactly.

It’s a High Pass or Low Cut Filter. The Lower the Cutoff, the more muffled it is.
‘Mir’ is just utterly beautiful… IMHO the best Ott Album and my new favorite album of all time. Just perfect. ‘Adrift In Hilbert Space’, ‘Squirrel & Biscuits’, ‘Mouse Eating Cheese’ are my faves at first listen.
At 2:48 of ‘01_ODIWTHTKOT’ there is an intresting kind od surround effect: the arp fades away towards the left and comes back from ‘behind’ to fade in to the right again.

Phenomenal! I do believe this is Otts masterpiece. The way the album as a whole flows is so perfect. One Day I Wish to Have This Kind of Time soothes you and drops you into a world of grooving bass and melodies transitioning perfectly into Hilbert Space. The bass gets a gritty side to it but still holds it quality sounding organic and IMO out doing any “dubstep” sound out there. Owl Stretching Time, my favorite track on Mir. Its sounds are dark, strangely beautiful and haunting while still holding onto the grittier bass style sound. Squirrel and Biscuits reminds me a lot of Rogue Bagel for some reason. The ending samples in this track give me chills every time. After being hammered by grooving beats and rhythms Mir sucks you up into A Nice Little Place, where almost all beats are lost and becomes very atmospheric. Very beautiful and a different sound from Ott that I did not expect from him. Feeling like your dropped back down from the clouds sounds change into an almost earlier Twisted, almost Shpongle esque type sound in Mouse Eating Cheese. Then finishing off with seven tracks, Aubergine of the Sun is one of those tracks that grow. The more you listen, the better it gets. All around a flawless performance. Thank you Ott!
Just listened to Mir and here’s my 2cents..
I definitely dig “One Day I Wish..” and “Aubergine Of The Sun”, they have the most solid classic Ott feel to them. I’m not too fond of dubstep, so I was a little disappointed to hear Ott getting in on the trend.
Needless to say he manages to inject his distinct sound into the genre which definitely makes it feel like an Ott album still and not *shudder* Bassnectar, or something of that sort.
Mir still has the same psychedelic dub feel that I expect from Ott and can say I am not disappointed by this album whatsoever, his newer dubstep influenced sound is growing on me more each listen.
As someone else mentioned, this album feels more edgy than the other Ott albums (maybe excluding Hallucinogen In Dub, which is still my favorite), and he manages to add a harsher dubstep style bass sound without losing the overall organic quality of the music.
Oh, and A Nice Little Place is orgasmic.
^^ You know, there’s two takes on Dubstep- the first is that it’s derivative of Dub and the second is that it isn’t. And if you fall in the latter category then there’s really no reason to make it irie and cool, you can just make crazy 50’s psy-fi monster music. Which isn’t very cool or groovy. But if the Dubstep is Dubby, then it can be pretty damn good (like Ott’s), because keep in mind that Dub is a genre that pushed the envelope off the table in the first place, so there’s lots of room in Dub for new heavy sounds. Seen!
