I’m a little disappointed with the album. I think it sounds to little like YB and to much like Coldplay. Not that it’s bad music, but it’s not the kind of music I listen to. I’m a big YB fan, but this isn’t real YB. Why didn’t they use a new band name? I really hope I get to listen to real YB music when the next album comes, but i won’t pledge anymore. It was to far away from what I expected.

Why didn’t they use a new band name?

This is definitely a fair comment considering that it is a huge departure from the previous YB output, and now it’s a trio and not a duo.

But the music shouldn’t be coming as a shock to anyone because half of the tracks have already been made available by Twisted (quite a few at least). I guess for me I was wondering what it would sound like as a whole, and I gotta say that I’ve played it about six times straight through. It does kind of work as a concept album, and most of the comparative references on this thread kind of bear that out. The last three tracks are really nice that way.

Y’know, just thinking about it, Last Days of Gravity did point pretty clearly in this direction…

I was always looking for a modern ‘Floyd sound - and this one hits it dead-on.

it has a couple of moments that remind me of pink floyd, but i think the style of the album (as a mix of different styles) is actually quite original - it’s actually one of its best characteristics.

if you want a modern pink floyd sound, try the orb - metallic spheres wink

I agree with your point - this was my intention. And Metallic Spheres is cool too!

Let’s hope they will go back to what they was. This is going mainstream and that is never good. Mainstream = cash, and that is what rules the world. Why is this always happening to all great band/artists? The music industry is missing integrity.

I don’t know. This album is great. Its different, but still great. Without evolution, we’d all be microorg’s huddling around a 7-mile-deep oceanic vent…

I thought it was going to suck. Turns out it’s alright. Ru has a great voice. The stuff does remind me a bit of Pink Floyd at some points, but not through and through. I’d have preferred something of the classic Younger Brother style, but this ain’t too bad. It really should have been released under a different band name, though. Expectations lead to disappointments, and this is not what you’d expect from Younger Brother. But as an album independent of all preconceptions it’s cool.

Hello friends and fellow shpongleheads,

I have given Vaccine plenty of time to settle in my mind now and there is no doubt, I am very disappointed with this album.  It seems that the younger brother sound I have known and loved is relegated to the past, which makes me very sad.  I agree that Last days of Gravity was kind of pointing in this direction, but to me that album still gelled together into a wonderful and magical psychedelic journey and this album just doesn’t do it for me.  It’s too poppy and coldplay-esque and sounds uninspiring and mainstream.

Crumblenaut is still my all-time favourite Younger Brother track, something about that tune just resonates with my soul.  Similarly, despite it pointing in the direction of the Vaccine style, I thought that Ribbon on a Branch was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard.  Vaccine does very little to excite me, there are only two tracks I like, Shine and Train, and even those two are nowhere near as exciting as the Younger Brother tracks of the past.  The rest of the album, in my honest opinion, is poppy rubbish.

Obviously this is a new direction for the band and it’s not going to appeal to everyone, I just hope with all of my heart that the band is heading in this direction because they believe in the sound, and not as some have suggested as a way to maximise profits from it.  I’m finding it very hard to convince myself it’s the former.

I fervently agree with whoever said that they should have changed the band name for this release, this is not the younger brother sound that I fell in love with.  I was planning to buy this on vinyl but I don’t think I’ll bother now as I don’t think I’d ever listen to it.

I guess I can only hope that the band somehow gets rich enough from mainstreaming the younger brother sound that they’ll have more freedom to work on the good stuff again, and maybe bring back the older younger brother sound under a new name.

I’ve heard some coldplay tracks and don’t think Vaccine sounds like them.

i actually genuinely hope it’s the latter. i really hope they get some commercial success out of this so that it can help bankroll future proper electronic productions. i’m very aware that twisted is struggling financially, and for me it would be a huge shame if it had to be closed down.

given how good the new prometheus album was, plus the prospect of a new hallucinogen album soonish, i really really with simon and benji would work together on dancefloor music. they’re both so damn good at it.

whereas vaccine is just an alright rock album, not helped by the often cringe-worthy lyrics. the sad thing is that the production on the album is actually really good - it’s got a subtle, dark element to it. compared to what’s out there in that genre, it has a lot more depth in that regard.

so i guess it’s quite obvious where their strength and weaknesses are. based on that, i think the ideal outcome would’ve been for simon and benji to produce an existing band’s album, and the result would probably have been better. at the same time, i think that if they persevere in this style, their next album or the one after that could turn out to be really good.

I don’t know why this guy chose to use the Bjork video, but it kinda, almost fits.

Another reason why I am frustrated… Pledgers got ... screwed… I do not know why the deluxe release was not available for everyone… Why do non-pledgers get a shot at these tracks? My pledge should cover this. But I get air. I understand the guys are touring, but can we get a heads-up on wtf is going on? Some of us are hurting here… Love the music, but feel a bit sad.

way to miss the point. dancefloor =/= MTV and one album =/= all of simon’s work.

i’m saying that they’re both masters of electronic music and that’s what i’d personally like to see them create in the near future.
