Hello friends and fellow shpongleheads,
I have given Vaccine plenty of time to settle in my mind now and there is no doubt, I am very disappointed with this album. It seems that the younger brother sound I have known and loved is relegated to the past, which makes me very sad. I agree that Last days of Gravity was kind of pointing in this direction, but to me that album still gelled together into a wonderful and magical psychedelic journey and this album just doesn’t do it for me. It’s too poppy and coldplay-esque and sounds uninspiring and mainstream.
Crumblenaut is still my all-time favourite Younger Brother track, something about that tune just resonates with my soul. Similarly, despite it pointing in the direction of the Vaccine style, I thought that Ribbon on a Branch was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard. Vaccine does very little to excite me, there are only two tracks I like, Shine and Train, and even those two are nowhere near as exciting as the Younger Brother tracks of the past. The rest of the album, in my honest opinion, is poppy rubbish.
Obviously this is a new direction for the band and it’s not going to appeal to everyone, I just hope with all of my heart that the band is heading in this direction because they believe in the sound, and not as some have suggested as a way to maximise profits from it. I’m finding it very hard to convince myself it’s the former.
I fervently agree with whoever said that they should have changed the band name for this release, this is not the younger brother sound that I fell in love with. I was planning to buy this on vinyl but I don’t think I’ll bother now as I don’t think I’d ever listen to it.
I guess I can only hope that the band somehow gets rich enough from mainstreaming the younger brother sound that they’ll have more freedom to work on the good stuff again, and maybe bring back the older younger brother sound under a new name.
