I’ve been into the ambient/dub/trance thing for quite a while now but I feel it’s time to make a contribution.  However I don’t have the slightest idea where to begin, what to buy, etc, etc..  What do you guys think would be the right stuff to buy to do ambient?
One of these days I’m off to the store for the new apple notebook G5..  good idea?
What are the recommended programns? Lemme now.  Cheerioh!

Well friend I certainly admire your ambition and the enthusiam for your desire to implant your thread of oscilating thoughts into this thing called music. There are two routes you can ultimately take both are expensive to some degree. The first route is to buy a few things and learn them so you can make music or two the second route is to find a producer in your style of music all the while putting your ideas together collecting(every idea) into a journal and crash course yourself into the studio. The first route can be fun if your techy and the second is cool if you really think you can hang with the big boys. Though you can learn how to do it all, you can also watch a pro and slowly buy things over time. Remember the studio is not only a creative space but also a classroom. So your money will go far. I can be with information for both routes but think about, and yeah having a notebook G5 is not a bad idea if its not gonna put you out financially. So get your journal and just start getting music ideas together, collecting samples, movies, clips, tv news, whatever. cause its all good in the end friend.

I prefer the pc myself; for the music making bit, but for strict production mac is ok.

One of my Dell (pc) laptop’s are running mac osx with protools and only emulated hardware; gets the job done!

But whatewer your hw is if your sw is Reason….
