Cybernetika returns to Ektoplazm with Colossus, an extraordinary full-length album fusing psychedelic trance and drum ‘n bass with futuristic science fiction atmospheres. Following on the enormous success of last year’s The Scythe Of Orion, which was declared the best free psytrance album of 2010 by Ektoplazm visitors, and building on the genre-bending experimentalism of Atropos (2009), this album delivers exactly what Cybernetika fans have been waiting for: epic storytelling through innovative electronic music. As with his previously releases, Cybernetika has written an epigraph to situate the album within a thematic framework: “As all-consuming waves of entropy were reaching our galaxy, mankind was forced into a desperate battle for survival. With discovered technologies far beyond our understanding, we were able to construct a last bastion against a rapidly dissolving universe, right in the center of our galaxy: The Colossus, a gigantic, artificial shield of protection, preserving stability of space itself. With the Colossus, we can defeat our own destiny…” Track 6 (Humanity: Static) originally written and produced by Vortech. Mastered by Kri @ Audiovalve. Artwork by Stefan Hürlemann.

Some releases have buttons that allow you to donate directly to the artists responsible. Most don’t, however. The option is always there for anyone I promote but few bother with it.

Incidentally, I typically incur expenses with every official release I do. Mastering and cover art are not always free… and then there are hosting costs to consider smile

Man…i’ve been bumping this album the past week…
REALLY enjoying it, a lot.
I’ve never heard drum’n'bass beats sound…“large”...like this album does.

Makes me want to try creating some too.

could it help with the bills to promote more p2p file exchange?  http://cloudcycle.net/log/  are fans of the whole torrent idea

if you had lower overheads due to hosting wavs and stuff maybe less advertising needed on your site too?

I have a standard response for this:

i’m really not sure i understand the whole netlabel thing at all.  i mean it’s very generous and all but i’m looking for the *angle*

Freedom of choice, freedom of expression. The commercial label system in the psytrance scene has failed for the most part. Good music is suppressed, formulaic music reigns supreme. It dilutes culture to discourage artists from taking risks. Netlabels offer creators the opportunity to explore different realms of sound and reach a huge audience unimpeded by the sort of guilt trips that have become industry standard in the music world.

Besides, the reality is that many of the most successful CD releases are only just breaking even. The labels are barely able to fund the distribution of their music. I can distribute several orders of magnitude more music for a fraction of the cost of traditional physical media distribution. If the artists want exposure, gigs, or kudos, why bother monkeying around with atoms, crooked distributors, and that sinking feeling you get when you inevitably find your work pirated? (Although, really, one should only worry if the pirates don’t care enough to help distributing your music!)

That’s the angle.

about the bill for ektoplazm - could it work to have like a three tier membership thing?  So, I dunno you can pay say $30 and have access to mp3 downloads then dj tiers $60 for 10? releases or upgrade option to $100 for wav access to all albums?  obviously this site revenue could split in proportion to number of downloads each artist has already - especially if site accounts are transparent to artists so they can budget for studio costs etc.

Then I am merely Beatport.

Things have to change… paying out hundreds of dollars a month for hosting has bled me dry over the years. Still, it’s not so bad. I don’t buy much music because I am paying to share it instead. This would be unremarkable if it weren’t for the insane amount of music I am able to find homes for. I have no reservations about this minor sacrifice for the greater good. But yes, the model may need to be altered moving forward into the future… though only time will tell.
