I’m thinking of trying an experiment where I don’t buy any music for a few months (maybe three?), and just getting music from from online sources. It would be nice to be able to download, I’m not in front of my computer all day. I have an idea of the clear winner (hint- Twisted puts their stuff up there), but I want to see what other people have to say or turn me on to. And I do want to give a big up to Ektoplazm for frequently posting on this board and making a ton of high quality music available to us. Out of all these choices they probably have the most genre-related stuff, but except for Twisted and Loud my taste is a little less psy (just because nobody else is really doing anything psychedelic when they copy the tropes).

I’m really happy that so many musicians are making their proprietary artwork available for free. Not to say I don’t buy their consumer product, because I have thousands of albums and CDs and I’ve bought every one (including tonnes of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized on vinyl- love Recurring and ...Music To Take Drugs To). And the huge bulk of music I download is from Beatport, the only free music I acquire is courtesy of the artists themselves. The majority of music I listen to on the sites listed above is only available to listen to, not download, so it’s more akin to radio anyway. I’m not going to start making music because I’ve been honing my skills in visual arts for decades and I want my art to be great (I don’t have thousands of hours to invest into learning music). I do loads of free and/or public art as well, and I rarely make a dollar!

For me it’s a tie between Bandcamp and Ektoplazm. Still a lot of ‘homework’ for me to go through.

SoundCloud is great, but I’m really liking Bandcamp these days.

Ok a few people here have said Bandcamp is all that… and more! So that’s what I want to check out. Thanks gang!

@Steve Palmer - did you read a lot of science fiction before you started writing your own?

i really like the books of iain m banks - in this article http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/may/13/iain-banks-science-fiction-genre - he mentions that “Science fiction is no place for dabblers”

Hi,
Yes, I read a lot of SF and fantasy. I don’t read so much these days to be honest. I like Gene Wolfe, Gwyneth Jones, Jack Vance, and I’m a big fan of China Mieville. He’s written some amazing novels.
