[quote author=“radioactivesandwich”]pitch black

Hi, newbie here, had to comment on the mention of Pitch Black (I think there are two, actually), but if you mean the dub-ambient duo from NZ (like me), then ‘Here, here!’... Paddy Free is brilliant.  Salmonella Dub get interesting at times, too, and they are often remixed by Pitch Black and/or Paddy Free.

Just to add… not so much like Shpongle, but maybe a good place to go if you’ve started with Shpongle might be Kid Loco, Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney, Rabbit in the Moon and possibly some selected BT and Hybrid moments.

Wing Makers - Chambers 1- 10 (and other chambers till 23)

Wing Makers appeared in 1998. It is a complex of visual art, philosophy, poetry, cosmology, MUSIC, and a background story, which explains how it all suddenly came out of nowhere. It is kind of sci-fi, or rather a modern mythology, and it’s followed by several interviews with the mysterious Dr. Neruda.

The music, released in the same year as Shpongle (so no copying here) is ambient, ethno world music, electroaccoustic, similar to Carbon based lifeforms, entheogenic, and so on… The music is dynamic, changes its moods, melodies, rhythms, it’s generally a bit in American Indian style, which corresponds with the background story.
It’s originally not divided into albums and tracks, but into chambers. Each chamber has its music, image, and the chambers are supposed to be in a gigantic DNA-shaped cave in the Ancient Arrow canyon in New Mexico, which was discovered full of alien artifacts. The story is amazing. It’s a mythology, not a fiction directly, but with a possibly real background. The huge amount of various art appeared out of nowhere in 1998 without any commercial purpose till this moment (except of the albums which are, of course, sold).
On the Wingmakers music Charlottemarie participated, but its origin is unknown, or rather, hidden in future (yes, there is sort of time travelling thing in the background story of WM).

Charlottemarie has also a wonderful album Ancestral Voice, catchy dancey tunes, chanting in dead and exotic languages, a fair share of ambience, I recommend!

Geomatic - Blue Beam

The trippiest electronica I’ve heard in a while…loads better than the generic psychill that’s been flooding the scene.

Anyone have the CD Madboojah: Project? Some of it sounds similar to Shpongle style judging only by the samples on psyshop.com. it seems like a pretty versatile album. I might buy it but want to hear anyone else’s opinion on the CD if they have it.

I don’t have the CD, yet. But this video sounds pretty awesome, too.
Madboojah - Project definitely is a must have for me.

Don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned, but Future Sound of London (  ) are another group who have put out some brilliant music, anywhere from the 1990s to the present.  I’d say ‘Shponglesque’, but the reverse might be more accurate.

Definitely worth a listen!

A friend gave me several FSoL albums but I didnt like them and didnt see any simularity.
Maybe it’s just me though, I only listened through one album fully and then sort of fast forwarded through the others because it didnt sound very interesting.

Oh and Madbooja looked really cool. The bagpipes were slightly off I think though

FSOL were one of the first groups to combine the structure, vibe and percussion from progressive dance music and the aesthetic and timbres from ambient music.  Prior to them, most groups either did one or the other.

So although they may not sound alike, they are both pioneers and arguably the flag-bearers for two generations of electronic hybridization. wink

I think someone mentioned dakini records earlier, they put out amazing music, such as:
Makyo - Yakshini
Padmasana - Padmasana (hard to find but is REALLY good trippy ambience)
Puff Dragon - Sazanami (already mentioned but worth getting)
Ochi Brothers - Ochi Brothers (also hard to track down but very very good)
Jairamji - Kindred Spirits (already mentioned but worth getting)

You’re right! I think it will stay in my music folder for a while.
This music is very similar to Asura (I think in the end there’s even the same sample like in their new album Life2) in the sense of deep and epic ethno sounding. But unlike Asura, Geomatic has also very original mindblowing electronic sound, (rather harsh) which really caught my attention and I don’t know how to describe it…maybe some industrial electro and a bit reminded me of Carbon Based Lifeforms’ Artificial Island track.
The first track, The Bliss, is my favorite.

Another good one that I forgot is a one off between Alio Die and Red Sector called Son Dha - Red Sector Speeds Up Alio Die.  As the title implies, this album adds rhythm and more structure to the organic sounds and pastoral drones of Alio Die.  It sounds more like the Vir Unis & James Johnson collaborations than Shpongle, but it’s well worth a listen.  Alio Die is one of the legends of ambient, and the spaces and textures that he so effortlessly weaves are much better than any you can find on almost any other rhythmic album.
