Hey everybody,

I just want to pitch an idea to you guys. I know it’s kind of a long shot but in my experience, Shpongle fans tend to be of the crazier kind, so let me know what you think.

While browsing through the twisted website, I came across the infamous mask, which is of course completely awesome. However, there may be a way to make it even more awesome.

My girlfriend is a glazier at Derix in Germany, one of Europe’s leading glass studios. She’s worked on some amazing stuff like The Dome Of Light in Taiwan. She also happens to be a Shpongle fan. Maybe not as much as me, but a fan nonetheless :)

She floated the idea of painting or printing a Shpongle mask on glass, or even making one entirely of glass. Imagine how this would look in your living room, subtly lighted. I get goose bumps just thinking about it!

Now, there are several things to consider. First of all, we’d need an OK from Shpongle, or twisted records, or whomever holds the trademark on the mask. I’m not a lawyer so I have no idea if this is actually needed, but I’d much rather not take any risks, especially since I have the utmost respect for Simon and Raja and would not even think about making money off of their work without their consent.

Secondly, doing these kinds of things is fairly expensive. The printed/painted version not so much, but making a negative for the glass mask would obviously require an original mask to create the negative from. In other words, producing on demand is not really an option, so it’d have to be on a preorder basis. And then there’s the shipping cost. I have no idea how much it is, but it’s probably a safe bet to assume that it would be a non-negligible amount for having it shipped to the States, for instance.

And thirdly, with glass you can never be 100% sure how your work turns out until it’s out of the oven. My girl has over ten years of experience, but it may very well take two or more tries to get it all right, which means the final price may differ from the original estimate.

What do you guys think?

I have two cents which I’m furiously trying to rub together to make a fire in my squalid hut. But it sounds awesome! I wonder how many of the cast resin masks sold (did you see those?) they were a bit smallish and I think about $400 if I remember well.

so, hang on, in order to get this up and running you need an original mask, right?

in that case, how do you propose to get a hold of one? the original shpongle mask was/is made of metal, and it’s much bigger (and looks better) than the resin one that you can get off the twisted shop.

basically, if you can somehow get a hold of a proper shpongle mask, i would be happy to pay $300 - $400 for a glass version. postage would be around $50, i’d say.

what you’re proposing sounds awesome, i have to admit, and i’d be happy to support you if the twisted guys (and especially satram) are happy with this. although i would suspect that they’d want to sell out of the resin masks first, because otherwise this would cannibalise their sales.

It’s a nice idea and would look great but I’m all for keeping things simple which would be Twisted producing the Shpongle poster which is in Posfords studio, in these tough times I think it’s the most sensible option and it looks great too.

I figured as much. We could still use the resin one to create the negative, although the original would of course make for a much more awesome glass mask.
I’ve contacted twisted through the contact form, let’s hope they get back to me.

Fair enough, but I think you’re severely underestimating the awesomeness of a lighted Shpongle mask on your wall. I sure as hell had no idea of what one can do with glass before I met my gf smile

P.S.: I’m out of town until tuesday, but feel free to post more feedback!

i like this idea a lot and i would be willing to provide the mask i ordered in the shop in order to get this project started. just one thing: would creating a negative cause damage to the mask used?

but of course twisted rec, as the assumed owner of the trademark, has something to say too. wink

basically, first of all let’s wait and see if you get permission.

if you do, i’m happy to help out e.g. provide money to get this started.

It seems the mask is no longer available in the Twisted Shop…

Did it sell out? Or not sell well enough?
