Hey everybody,
I just want to pitch an idea to you guys. I know it’s kind of a long shot but in my experience, Shpongle fans tend to be of the crazier kind, so let me know what you think.
While browsing through the twisted website, I came across the infamous mask, which is of course completely awesome. However, there may be a way to make it even more awesome.
My girlfriend is a glazier at Derix in Germany, one of Europe’s leading glass studios. She’s worked on some amazing stuff like The Dome Of Light in Taiwan. She also happens to be a Shpongle fan. Maybe not as much as me, but a fan nonetheless :)
She floated the idea of painting or printing a Shpongle mask on glass, or even making one entirely of glass. Imagine how this would look in your living room, subtly lighted. I get goose bumps just thinking about it!
Now, there are several things to consider. First of all, we’d need an OK from Shpongle, or twisted records, or whomever holds the trademark on the mask. I’m not a lawyer so I have no idea if this is actually needed, but I’d much rather not take any risks, especially since I have the utmost respect for Simon and Raja and would not even think about making money off of their work without their consent.
Secondly, doing these kinds of things is fairly expensive. The printed/painted version not so much, but making a negative for the glass mask would obviously require an original mask to create the negative from. In other words, producing on demand is not really an option, so it’d have to be on a preorder basis. And then there’s the shipping cost. I have no idea how much it is, but it’s probably a safe bet to assume that it would be a non-negligible amount for having it shipped to the States, for instance.
And thirdly, with glass you can never be 100% sure how your work turns out until it’s out of the oven. My girl has over ten years of experience, but it may very well take two or more tries to get it all right, which means the final price may differ from the original estimate.
What do you guys think?
