Upon my very first listen, my thoughts were something like this:
Man…no downtempo, this is all mid-tempo trance.
The songs don’t connect to each other like I had hoped…
I’m not sure I’m really “getting” this album
Is this unt-z part in Jellyfish really happening?
Then…a second listen. Everything changed. I understood what Simon was trying to say with this. Why did I come into this with a preconceived notion of what it might be? OF COURSE it’s unlike anything Shpongle’s ever released…and that’s the best part!
This album is genius. The songwriting, production, and especially the song structure just puts this album on a level that most artists can’t touch. It’s absolutely gorgeous, I’ve never heard something that made me want to dance so much, and it’s just so innovatively psychedelic, it’s literally like my brain is floating in a fish tank.
I am absolutely OBSESSED with the album. The production is outstanding - SO incredibly clean, I can’t believe it. The song structure and the tempos take the cake. The way Simon brings back certain parts, and when he introduces the kick drum in each song…it’s OUT. STANDING!
After listening to the album nonstop for the past three weeks, I’d have to say that my two favorites are Brain In A Fish Tank and The Epiphany of Mrs. Kugla.
I’m in the process of writing a track-by-track review of the album right now, so giving it yet another good hard listen. One of the best albums I’ve ever heard.
