just got “are you shpongled?” in the mail this weekend and i ripped it for my mp3 player… however, when i get to about 16minutes or so into “...and the day turned to night” i get this horrible distortion. i tried multiple mp3 rippers (soundforge, itunes, windows media, easy cd ripper) and i tried it on 2 computers… no go…

anyone got any ideas?

Try playing the CD in realtime and hitting Record in soundforge

No I can’t see why the quality would degrade if you use that method. You shouldn’t have to use any wires or plugs, just play the CD in the computer CD-ROM drive and then hit Record in SF

Just make sure you turn off any other ‘sound effects’ that might occur while you’re playing (ie: Instant Message popups, etc)

Try ripping the CD to either a lossless format or even uncompressed (WAV).  If your disc plays perfectly than this type of rip should not have any artifacts.  The program that rippers swear by is EAC, which has error correction features that most other programs do not have.  There are tutorials on how to properly configure it all over the web.  From there, rip an MP3.

I would not try to record the CD into Soundforge because the signal chain involves several more stages than if you just rip using EAC.

I strongly believe, if it’s the last track, that you have to change the CD-ROMs speed rate! I know it may work for all other songs/CDs, but I also had 1-2 times that problem. I used Nero, with the Burning software some other software part of Nero tools, to slow it down.

Let me know, if you ever try, but I’m quite certain that that’s the case (but I’m not sure, ‘cause mine was skipping, not distorted).

I used winamp to rip it to FLAC and I use CDex to rip it to mp3 (CDex using LAME enc). Both methods worked fine and didn’t result in any distortion so maybe its some shifty CD-ROM settings causing the errors.

I didn’t rip it I just put directly in to the mp3 player but try Adobe Audition formerly Cool Edit. I usually find this works. However the cd copy is at 192Kbps and the files are quite small so I recommend not to rip if you can
