I listen to both kinds of music…

Goa & Classical raspberry

Been listening to classical since I was young, and found goa back in 94.  Goa was the sound I was looking for.

(psytrance, psybient, etc = Goa)

I imagined Goa being like the ancestor for psytrance and psybient.  But I understand loving it all heheh.

Although I’m a big fan of psytrance, Drum n bass/Jungle, dub and ambient. My favorite is 60’s/70’s psy rock. Pink Floyd is my all time favorite. I’m a big fan of The Doors, Hendrix etc.
I also have a big passion for Classical music Beethoven being my favorite composer. I beleive this guy was the a psy artist of his era. Alot of his symphonies and piano sonatas are fast paced and have a very noticable 4 beat going on. I think this guy was a genius, especially being able to produce music whilst being hard of hearing. I read that to overcome his disability he cut the legs of the piano and would feel the vibration thru the floor. Now that is something.

Psy is simply goan techno today…. most producers now have never been to Goa so they don’t use the term… they’ll simply call it Psychedelic Trance.  It’s all goa to me.

Are there any other psy-trance lovers that started out listening to hardcore gabber?

In the city I live in there seems to be a trend that people who listened to gabber in the late 90s also had a liking for psytrance

I still listen to both, in fact I’d say my gabber collection is fast outgrowing my psy collection!

I use to be into acid house in 88-89 then followed the rave scene which then went off into all directions i.e. jungle etc.  Was never into gabba though, find it a bit mad - each to there own.

Cool.

I’ve always wanted to make some kind of psy-gabber hybrid, I think it would be really unique and work well at nighttime. It would be the same speed as slow proggy psytrance (130ish) and would still retain the same “groove” as psy, but with a stompy distorted drum and doomy synths.

I’m thinking Dr. Macabre mixed with Sensient?

One day!

Anyone know of a good site that classifies the different genres and gives some examples of artists from each.  I’m 35 and to be quite honest, getting a little lost with all the different classifications.

Wiki has an exhaustive list:

...but not really something I want to plod through.  Any suggestions?

I can’t say I have a fav. genre…I’m too eclectic and it depends on the day.  One day I’ll be deep into Autechture and the next I’ll be listening to Porcupine Tree.  The groups that got me into electronic music would have to be Kraftwerk, Trio and Depeche Mode.  It is interesting how many people here have an interest in classical and progressive rock as well.  I guess we all just like music that pushes the envelope.

Ashley Simpson anyone?  No-way!

I have exactly what you need. In fact this is what most people use to get themselves started!

Ishkur’s Guide To Electronic Music

It takes you through each genre and subgenre, and lets you see the progression through the 70s, 80s, 90s, and today.

You’ll need a bit of bandwidth, though!

Thanks Adam, I’ll take a peek.
I’ve got a T1 here at work.

—-back after a brief visit—-

Whew - what an intense site.  Thanks again for sharing that with me.
I think I need to listen to ...nothing for a while…
