I wish…But I’m curious as to how many people check out this post .Sorry if it seems like a cruel trick =) I’m sure I’m not the first to suggest this, but I think it would be a spectacular idea to either collaborate or throw a concert with TOOL, using Alex Grey’s artwork the way they did on the Lateralus tour. Huge, flourescent tapestries of his work unfurled from the rafters throughout the show. Now if only Bill Hicks was alive…The perfect MC…
o my god…
it seems like I’m just seeing they, Tool and Shpongle, playing togheter, with Alex Grey pictures, the lights…
Hopefully I can live it..
That show, Oklahoma, is the best I have seen of they playing live
[quote author=“electrobot.808”]I’d love to see Alex Grey do the back drops etc for the Shpongle gig next year and the artwork for the box set. :?:
I have seen alex backdrops at the only shpongle shows I have seen, tool is good in a differant way, but lets not mix shows both are to be seen in their own way.
Oh, how wrong you are. Who says they can’t be “mixed” or be seen at a festival or concert together? Maybe I am a visionary. Maybe I can help make it a reality. And I’m sure if the artists were asked, they would agree that it would be a great idea. So let’s post the question in “questions and answers”.
I don’t see how you guys can possibly equate Tool with Shpongle or any psychedelia in general. Just because Alex Grey has contributed artwork to their latest album, in no way makes them psychedelic AT ALL…
Tool sounds the same as they always have… they barely change, if at all. They make trippy videos… but there is absolutely nothing trippy about their music or sound…
I’m not saying Tool are bad. I’m just saying, plain and simple, there music IS NOT PSYCHEDELIC, or hallucinogenic, or mind-bending, or trippy, and ECSPECIALLY NOT something that would ever mix well with Shpongle…
I just saw a fan made mix/compilation on soulseek where someone combined a tracklist of shpongle and tool songs…
WHY????
my vote goes for Shpongle vs. Mr. Bungle = MR. SHPONGLE
some songs more than others. third eye and lateralus being arguably two of their most psychedlic. it’s more than the sound of the music being “psychedelic”, however. the messages and common themes also seek to promote the expansion of consciousness- most notably in the album “lateralus”- which is sadly lacking in mainstream music. bungle WAS good. however, psychedelic? i would classify them more as a fusion of many different kinds of music, everything from experimental jazz, to funk, to surf rock. i guess it depends on your definition of psychedelic. too bad they haven’t made public any plans to reunite. still would love to see patton making squirrel noises over a psytrance groove though. :D don’t want to turn this into a debate..just my two cents.
I completely agree with you about bungle. They aren’t that psychedelic (though the album Disco Volante is a trip…), however they are a giant fusion of so many things, as are Shpongle, thus why I beleive it would make a perfect collaboration…
You’re right. If anything patton needs to get his ass into the psy scene.
you….son of a bitch….I lept out of my chair at the sight of this thread. It’s cool though, having read it has actually made my day much more exciting. YB was sick on NYE!!!!!!
oh come on man… i still think tool and shpongle would be boring… tool lack any sort of evolution… how would they do anything other than limit and hold back the shpongle sound…
sorry if that pisses any tool fans off… but you know it’s true… every record is the same… no experimentation. maybe a few cool basslines in lateralus… not much else.
also some of their music vids were heavily emulating and ripping off the stylings of the brothers quay. so much to the point where brothers quay have commented on the matter. the resemblence is striking… there’s nothing wrong with tribute (for example, the clown on a tricycle from the SAW movies, was based on a brothers quay film called “return of gilgamesh”). however, flat out immatating another artists individual style, is pretty low.
i’ll try an stop being an art prick. but please, for the love of god. keep unevolving bands away from the monsterously evolving, ground-breaking, and experimental entity of shpongle.
I think you’re missing the point of the original post. A tool-shpongle collab WOULD be ground-breaking on both their parts, as you’re essentially melding prog rock and ambient psy-trance world music, or whatever. How do you define evolution in music? Is there such a thing? Perhaps incorporating different genres of music into your own is “experimental” or “evolutionary” for a particular artist, for another, it may be enough to draw from the artist’s evolution as a human, using a signature sound as the expressive medium. Tool definitely have a distinct sound. Does this mean they lack talent or originality? Upon hearing the Disco Biscuits for the first time, the first thing I thought of was the Dead and Phish, two of their biggest influences, obviously. Would you call it imitation? Apart from incorporating “trance” elements into the music, what sets them apart? Are they unoriginal and “unevolving” because they aren’t infusing 60’s italian sitcom soundtracks, gypsy music, and death metal into their music like Bungle? Don’t get me wrong, I like the band. Just making a point. Tool became big because of their distinct sound, like the Biscuits and so many other bands. I proposed a collab or concert because of the message behind the music, primarily in Lateralus. One last thing. Even if bungle did regroup and they did team up with shpongle, don’t you think a better name would be Shpungle or Mr. Shpungle? Methinks yes.
I think too that CheTralfara missing the point of the original post….... :D
First that I am TOTALLY in agreement with DIGITALEX. He could not have explained better.
